Social media has become such a common medium of interaction in our culture that the Internet has become intertwined with reality in a way. Whatever is done on the Internet can have an effect on people in the real world, whether it is positive or negative. You Are What You Click by David Auerbach is about companies like Facebook and Google that sell their users information to 3rd party groups for money. It happens often when you are shopping or searching up products on your computer. Advertisements with some sort of click bait show up of exactly what you were looking for before. This seems like a sort of spying or overwatch, and it is quite unsettling to know everything i search up and click on is watched. Nikil Saval, author of The Wall of Sound, takes the reader through the history of how music was listened to and sold. The iPod was a revolutionary device that changed everything. On an iPod, a person can buy the songs they like for a low price rather than spending more money on an album they don't want. Cassettes and and CD's were a task to carry if one wanted to listen to more than one album in the day. The downsizing and efficiency made the Apple product such a success. The Judgement of Thamus is about King Thamus's claims that technology is never has or will have a good effect on people. Postman, the author, says Thamus was too worried over the negatives of technological advances, while never looking for the good in what can come of them. Postman uses the printing press as an example because when it was invented, it allowed Christian homes to have a Bible and practice their religion. Love the One You're Near covers the dating apps we have today that are responsible for pairing adults to go out on dates. Match and eHarmony have connected people that will end up spending the rest of their lives together, which is amazing. And lastly, Gin, Television, and Social Surplus talks about the impact of TV and alcohol lowered stress in America and kept people informed. Alcohol, which may be able to relieve stress for the moment, is not a reliable source of relief, but still managed to keep people calm. But it also caused mass alcoholism because of liquor's addictive qualities.
