RPC Chapter 5

Ken Auletta, the author of Netflix and the Future of Television, talks about the shift people are making from live TV to streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime are all platforms to stream TV shows and movies at any point the viewer wants. This aspect makes live TV obsolete because why would someone wait for a certain time for their program to come on when they can watch it at any time they please? But even if it isn't live television, it can still be an addicting thing to do. When you have the freedom to watch entire seasons of shows, binge watching occurs. And when people get too into their television, they can easily have all their attention focused on what is being shown. In Television Addiction is No Mere Metaphor, the authors also talk about how binge watching can screw up someone's priorities because they would rather put entertainment in front of what they need to do in real life. Many of the women in shows are vulnerable characters since that's how many writers of shows write in their female counterparts. Girls, Girls, Girls asks the question, why can't women have independent and strong roles in TV? I think this is a valid question because it's not very often a strong woman character is in a production. Next was The Apocalyptic Strain in Pop Culture by Paul Cantor, and he writes about how many TV shows are about the government not doing their best at something depending on which show it is. But when there are shows where there is no government, like in The Walking Dead, the society the characters live in becomes the American Dream. There's no control and they only rely on themselves to stay alive and live well. Being unlikeable on TV is good for ratings, according to Stay Unlikeable, because not many people will be entertained watching a goodie 2 shoes do nothing wrong throughout the series. Bad character makes a good story, and rakes in the good ratings. Tv shows are better than movies in a few ways as explained in Why Television is Better Than Movies. Movies don't go in depth like many shows do since tv shows can go on forever with new seasons, while movies are limited to time. Not everyone enjoys watching 3+ hour movies. But if there are 70 half hour shows of a series, a person might be a little more interested. Character development occurs more often and in more detail through shows because, again, the timing.
