RPC Chapter 4

Elevate My Mind is about love in the genre of hip-hop and rap. The author explains that the artists have an image they like to uphold, and since talking about love is a vulnerable thing, rappers don't make songs about it often. But female artists are a little more open to it than the men. The women of the genre early on imitated the men's clothing, slang, and mentality to fit in and get credibility from the audiences, while others dressed as the sexual objects the male rappers talked about in their music. In country music, the content is much different. In Country Music: Openness to Experience, the author acknowledges that conservatives are more orderly and liberals are more open-minded to trying new things, which is why conservatives are the main fan base of country music. The genre talks about the wonders of an everyday, casual life, which sounds great to most right wings, but not appealing at all to liberals. Left wings would rather travel, do drugs, or listen to anything other than country to escape the bore everyday life. Autotune is a big part of the music industry today because of its use in nearly every genre. Its so normalized now in studios when recording, that it is now used during live performances and concerts. T-pain was a pioneer with autotune in the early and late 2000s, and his talent with the software trickled down to new artists we have today. Latin roots are a big part of LA culture, as written in Riffs of Passage. Bilingual groups keep their native language in their art because their heritage is important and it adds a new layer to their work. Pilar Diaz was born in Chile and came to America with her family as a child. She uses a lot of her life experiences in her work to displays the reality of immigration along with the stereotypes Latinos go through in the USA. Pop music is on the rise and its popularity is taking over music. Pop is usually a song with a catchy hook/chorus and mediocre verses since the industry is just pumping these types of songs out. The popularity of this genre almost drowns out the talent of other kinds of music because all the attention is on the pop stars. The Rise of Poptimism also says pop is the death of bands since pop usually only has solo artists with unnamed people making the music in the background. Lastly, Concerning the Spiritual in Indie Rock opens talking about how music is an expression of the artist. It taps into what the artist thinks, feels, and/or wants and that's always been the purity of music. But today many of the mainstream artists don't create to express how they feel, they just make music that is catchy for the masses to hear. Berman goes into depth with some current underground bands that are going against the grains and going back to music's original way of being made. The importance of lyrics and their literal and metaphorical meanings contribute to the raw intensity when being delivered.
